The idea of filtering shower water seems strange to most people that first hear about shower filters.

Most first time shower filter users are amazed at the immediate benefits of showering in soft water that’s chlorine-free.
Read on to compare shower filter benefits with your needs and desires. The first benefit of a shower filter is relief from dry itchy skin. Chlorine is added to water systems to kill disease causing micro-organisms. Unfortunately, chlorine also binds with proteins in your skin and kills skin cells. This leads to dry, itchy skin and aggravates existing skin conditions such as eczema.

Hard water leaves behind mineral deposits when it evaporates and combines with soap to form soap scum.

These residues form on your skin and dry out the natural oils. They also flake off as your skin moves, but damage the skin in the process. Filtered shower water also give you silky hair that’s easy to manage. Chlorine and hard water also damage your hair. Hard water and soap scum deposits are even worse for fine hair. Your hair becomes stiff and dry from these deposits. Also, your hair is damaged when the hard water deposits flake off. Chlorine-free showers make your hair color or highlights last longer.

Chlorine is the active ingredient in household bleach. Just like bleach can turn a pair of blue jeans white, chlorine in shower water fades your hair color.
The chlorine in your shower is a lower concentration, so you don’t notice it right away, but chlorine does remove hair color.
Shower filters also reduce your exposure to chemicals.
Your body absorbs many times more chemicals in the shower that it ever could by drinking the same water.

Warm shower water opens your skin’s pores so your skin readily absorbs whatever is in the shower water.
Chemicals like chlorine evaporate quickly in a hot shower and enter your lungs as you breathe the shower steam.
Your home’s indoor air quality will be improved by a shower filter. The chlorine that evaporates from your shower water is often combines with other chemicals in the air of your home.

Modern homes are “tight” so they retain heated or cooled air for energy efficiency. This means all the chemicals released inside your home are also retained in the indoor air. Thus everyone in your home can be affected by breathing the chlorine derivatives found in the typical modern home. Shower filtration also eliminates a trigger for asthma attacks.

If someone in your home suffers from asthma or other breathing problems, eliminating every source of irritation to the lungs can help avoid an asthma attack.

It’s certainly worth a try to eliminate a major source of indoor air pollution, especially when the shower is typically near a bedroom, where we spend many hours sleeping (and breathing).

Filtration of shower water protects your children’s health. All the above benefits apply to adults and children, however because children have immature immune systems they are most susceptible to many of these problems. Children can be impacted by chlorine in shower water even if they don’t take a shower themselves.

So how many of those benefits align with a problem you or someone in your home experiences on a daily basis?

Any one of these benefits can easily lead to an improvement that would make the small investment in a shower filter seem insignificant.

The search for a good handheld shower filter can be tough. At least, it was tough for me. It’s hard to get the details out of some companies. You almost have to call them up and ask them questions.

What contaminants do your handheld shower filters remove? What filtration steps are included? How is the percentage of contaminant reduction? Those are the questions that you need to ask. It is sometime hard to get the answers, but every once in a while, you run across a really good product that is worth mentioning to other people.

First, though, I’d like to tell you how I tell the good products from the bad. I am always suspicious of companies that do not go into a lot of details about their products. They may be trying to keep it simple, but I feel as though they are trying to hide something.

There is one handheld shower filter made by a company called Paragon Water. On there website, they claim to reduce chlorine by 99%, but they don’t go into any detail about removal of other contaminants. They do mention a reduction of Hydrogen Sulfide, but if you have that in your water, you would know it.

It produces a smell like rotten eggs and it’s present in some shallow wells. Charcoal would reduce the smell, but not the actual gas content in the atmosphere. Since the company doesn’t go into any details, I have to assume that they use charcoal in their handheld shower filters.

I was able to find independent surveys indicating that Paragon handheld shower filters reduce chlorine by only 50%. That won’t work for someone who’s allergic to chlorine. For the rest of us, it just won’t make that much difference.

A handheld shower filter should reduce chlorine by at least 90%, in order to be effective. There’s another problem with Paragon and other showerhead systems that reduce chlorine. They don’t reduce THMs.

THMs or trihalomethanes are in any publicly treated water supply. There are some regulations in place to limit the amount that may be present at the treatment facility, but research indicates that exposure to any amount increases an individual’s risk of cancer.

There is some disagreement among scientists as to what source of exposure is accompanied by the greatest risk. But, at least one research group has concluded that exposure by inhalation in an enclosed bathroom carries the greatest risk. So, in order to protect your health, you need handheld shower filters that reduce THMs by at least 90%.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="http://aquanoia.com/images/B0016G2C0I/" /><td></tr><tr><td><td></tr></table>Another problem with Paragon and some of the other companies is that they don’t reduce metallic contaminants, such as lead and copper. You might wonder why it is important for a handheld shower filter to remove these contaminants.

It is true that consumption carries the only risk of lead poisoning. But, if lead or copper is present in your water, your skin and hair will be duller. Copper can actually change the color of your hair. So, for strictly cosmetic reasons, the best handheld shower filters remove the metals.

The most effective handheld shower filter on the market can be purchased for less than $85.00. It was the right choice for my family and maybe yours, too.

Don’t buy water filters for shower heads until you know the facts. We all need shower filters for copper and chlorine, but there are some products on the market that are a real waste of money.

I don’t mean to sound cheap. But, why pay more, when you can get something effective for a fraction of the cost? We are on a budget. So, I always shop around, comparing quality and performance. If I have to pay more to get better quality, then I will. But, when I began to compare water filters for shower heads, I realize that some of these companies are trying to rips us off.

“Wellness”, for example, is the most expensive brand on the market. They make unsubstantiated claims about the performance of their products. They have not had their products evaluated by independent laboratories, the California Health Department of other regulating agencies.

On the flip side of the coin, there are water filters for shower heads that do not remove copper or lead. They do not reduce hazardous chemicals that become airborne in the shower. Yet, they cost more than the most effective systems on the market.

When it comes to shower filters for copper and chlorine, there are only three products on the market with effective chemical reduction. The prices range from $67.99 to $249.00 for the Wellness brand.

Companies like “Paragon” and “Shower-wise” do not provide effective chemical removal, but there prices are about the same as the more effective shower filters for copper and chlorine. I’ve already mentioned that Wellness is a waste of money.

But, a $70 system that does not remove chlorine byproducts or metallic traces is also a waste of money. The Paragon and Shower-wise systems only reduce chlorine by 50% and do nothing to reduce chlorination byproducts. Those byproducts have been shown to increase your cancer-risk. The threat in the shower is believed to be greater than the threat in the kitchen. In other words, inhaling the fumes and allowing the chemical to soak into your skin is worse than consuming them in a glass of water.

So, you need shower filters for copper and chlorine that also remove trihalomethanes (THMs). The most effective systems remove more than 90% of those chemicals and about 70% of the lead and copper.

If you’re tall, you might want to rule out water filters for shower heads that reduce the shower head height. If you like an invigorating massage, you need to look for one with a flow-rate around 2.5 Gallons per minute.

If you have kids or if you like a tub-bath, you want to look for shower filters for copper and chlorine that have a removable wand. That way you can fill up the tub, too.

Once you find the right system, you will never go back to showering in chlorinated water. It’s almost like showering in spring-water. It feels that good. Hopefully, the information here will help you find the right water filters for shower heads and save some money, too.

Shower filters don’t have to be that expensive. As celebrity physician Dr. Oz said on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, you can take advantage of the great effects of a shower filter for less than nine cents a day. In fact, you can buy a shower filter for as little as twenty dollars, and even the most expensive of them don’t cost much more than two hundred dollars.

And even the most inexpensive shower filter will protect your skin and hair from moisture-removing contaminants that will sap them of their strength. Plus, tap water can contain all kinds of contaminants that can cause allergic reactions and aggravate skin conditions. For example, it often has chlorine that, when heated, can create clouds of harmful gas right in your bathroom. There are also pathogenic microbes and metals in there. And even if you think you’re not being exposed to such things because you do not drink tap water, what you don’t realize is that your skin will absorb shower water and thus the effect is almost the same as if you were drinking your shower water!

A couple items to keep in mind: if you’re concerned about the price when you’re shopping for a shower filter, don’t just look at the price of the filter itself but also see how much money the cartridges will cost. And remember to replace those cartridges as often as they need to be replaced–otherwise you’re not getting the real effects of the filter and thus you’re not getting the value for your money.

Chlorine shower filters may be even more important to your family’s health than your kitchen filter. Asthma, allergy specialists and other physicians are now routinely recommending chlorine filters for shower heads for their patients. Dermatologists and cosmetologists have been recommending them for about a decade.

Millions of people world wide are using chlorine shower filters. It might be something for you to consider, too. The health and cosmetic benefits are huge. You’ll notice some of the differences immediately.

You probably know how chlorine dries out your hair and skin. It may even give color treated hair a greenish tinge. It’s taking the fun out of swimming for lots of people. There’s not much you can do about, unless you want to give up swimming, but with chlorine filters for shower heads, you don’t have to deal with it at home.

The chlorine content in some tap water is higher than what you find in swimming pools. During certain time of the year, the treatment facilities “clean the pipes” and the tap water actually looks yellow. It gets in the air too, by way of the steam in the shower. Good chlorine shower filters trap it before it has a chance to vaporize.

You will notice softer skin and hair right from the beginning. Companies that manufacture the best chlorine filters for shower heads guarantee it. They use multi-stage systems that block 99.9% of the chemicals.

The latest news about chlorine shower filters has to do with the health advantages. Chlorine vapors have been linked to several types of cancer, including breast, bladder and rectal. In the air, it becomes chloroform gas and the affects of chloroform can be immediate. Fatigue and dizziness are two of the symptoms of exposure.

The FDA has said that virtually every home in the United States has some level of chloroform gas. The cause is showering in unfiltered water. That’s one big reason that you see more and more people with chlorine filters for shower heads. You’ll even find them in some of the better hotels around the country.

The best chlorine shower filters have multiple stages, designed to block as many of the chemicals as possible. They are reasonably priced and attractive. They aren’t bulky and they install quickly without tools.

People with asthma will have fewer attacks after beginning to use chlorine filters for shower heads. The chlorine and other chemical vapors are respiratory irritants. People who work with the substances wear masks to protect themselves.

The only way to protect your self is with good chlorine shower filters. Once you try one, you’ll never want to shower in unfiltered water again.

First of all, chlorine filters for shower heads should also remove other hazardous contaminants, namely trihalomethanes (THMs),volatile organic chemicals (VOCs,) lead and copper. Most of the products on the market cannot do all of those things, because they don’t include the appropriate steps.

When I first went shopping for chlorine shower filters, I had already learned about the health and beauty hazards in our water supply, so I knew what I wanted. I finally narrowed my choices down to two systems. One cost over $200. One cost only $67.99.

Like many people, I usually assume that a higher price indicates higher quality. But that is not the case, in this instance. The higher priced chlorine filters for shower heads are made by a company called Wellness. So, I visited their website and looked at their claims, but then I did my own research.

They claim that their chlorine filters for shower heads “imbue” the water with health-giving abilities. This is relatively impossible.

Simply removing chemical and organic contaminants does make your water healthier, but you can’t really “imbue” it with anything. They claim that by running your tap-water over rare Japanese stones, the quality of those stones will be passed along, into the water.

That’s just not possible. The waters of our world have a natural mineral content because they sit in the ground or above it for many years. Some minerals become dissolved in the waters. So, you find the presence of things like lead, a naturally occurring but hazardous heavy metal, calcium, which is present in a variety of rocks and stones and sodium, which is one of the most common minerals in the world.

What you don’t find is water that has antibacterial or anti fungal activity. That’s what the Wellness company claims that their chlorine shower filters do. They claim that your water will act as an antibacterial and an anti fungal agent. It’s just not going to happen and it’s a lot more than you need to pay.

Then you will find the numerous chlorine filters for shower heads that only reduce chlorine-content by about 50%. They do nothing to remove THMs, which are present in any publicly treated supply, are absorbed through the skin and cause cancer.
The run-of-the-mill chlorine shower filters do nothing to remove VOCs, which are present in most supplies, are absorbed through the skin and cause numerous health problems. They don’t even remove lead and copper which dull the hair and the skin, as well as stain your fixtures.

You can and should get effective chlorine filters for shower heads in your home. You just don’t have to pay a fortune for them. $67.99 gives you everything that you need. If you want to pay more, invest in one that has a removable massage head, so that you can fill the tub for a bath in what is effectively natural spring water.

Now, you know what to look for in chlorine shower filters and you know that high price does not always indicate high quality.

Are shower head water filters really necessary? What are the best shower filters? Here you’ll find the answers to these questions and more.

More chemicals enter your body through your skin and by inhalation during a shower than when you drink the same water. According to the American Journal of Public Health, chlorine has been linked to certain types of cancer and as much as 2/3 of the harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhaling the vapors during a shower. Knowing this, you can see why shower head water filters are necessary, if you are concerned about your future and present health.

The best shower filters use a two stage system that reduces chlorine and other chemicals while enhancing the pH balance of the water. In the first stage, your tap water flows through a granular copper/zinc medium. During the second, it flows through the more common activated carbon filter.

The best shower filters use a high grade carbon derived from coconut shell, rather than charcoal. The carbon filter further reduces the chemicals that can vaporize and be inhaled with the steam while you are showering.

Shower head water filters initially become popular because of the cosmetic benefits to the hair and skin. In just a short period of time, usually a matter of days, your hair will feel softer. Your skin will feel softer and look younger. You will need less moisturizers and conditioners.

Chlorine has a harsh drying affect on the hair and skin. If you swim in a chlorinated swimming pool, you know how terrible your hair and skin feel afterwards. You run to the shower, right away.

But wait, if there are no shower head water filters in your home, then you are exposing yourself to even more chlorine. It has been noted that the chlorine content in some public drinking water systems is higher than what you find in a swimming pool, particularly during certain times of the year when the water treatment facilities are “cleaning the pipes”.

During those times, you can actually see the yellow powder. If you allow a glass of unfiltered tap water to sit, you will see the yellow powder on the bottom of the glass. If you boil a pot of that unfiltered water, the amount you see will astound you.

The yellow powder is chlorine. It disinfects the water and kills just about anything that might be in the water. Local governments assure us that it is safe to humans, but anything that KILLS other living organisms can not be good for ANY living organism. The best shower filters will protect you and your family, even when the content is extremely high.

If you have a filter on your kitchen tap, the next logical step for your family’s health is adding shower head water filters in the bathrooms. Once you try them, you will never want to bathe in unfiltered water again.

Shower filters for copper and chlorine provide health, as well as cosmetic benefits to everyone in your home. Chlorine filters for shower heads do not always target copper or other chemical contaminants, because some people think it is unnecessary.

But, the truth is that showering in chemical contaminants could be even more hazardous to your health than drinking them. During a bath, chemicals are absorbed through the pores of your skin. That’s how medicated patches work.

So, those chemicals enter your blood stream even more quickly than if you drank a gallon of the same water. Chlorine filters for shower heads became popular first as a beauty aid.

Chlorine dries the skin and hair. It effectively changes the hair’s natural color, because you are effectively bleaching your hair, every time that you take a bath without chlorine filters for shower heads.

Shower filters for copper and chlorine provide additional protection for the health and appearance of your hair, as well as improving the smell of the water. Copper has a very low toxicity. A child would have to swallow a number of copper pennies to suffer any truly ill effects. But, lead, on the other hand, is very toxic.

Shower filters for copper and chlorine also remove lead, so you and the kids are safer. No level of lead is safe for consumption, but it is found in the tap water of many homes across the country. It causes a variety of health problems including learning disabilities and brain damage.

Research suggests that high levels of lead in the bloodstream are linked to juvenile delinquency and behavioral problems. If you have kids, you need an effective water filter on your kitchen tap and shower filters for copper and chlorine in all of your bathrooms.

You can have your water tested, but unless you test on a daily basis, there is no way to be sure. Levels of lead found in water vary greatly from one day to the next. If the test is conducted after the water has been running for a while, the results will be inaccurate. The safest choice is to choose the tap water filter that removes the most contaminants and lead, copper, chemical and chlorine filters for shower heads around the house.

Let me get back to the cosmetic benefits for a moment. Copper can cause color treated hair to have a “green” tinge. Chlorine can cause color treated hair to turn orange. This is one reason that so many hair dressers recommend shower filters for copper and chlorine.

Depending on where you live the level of chlorine in the tap water may be higher than what is safe to swim in. Our “water quality” report showed that it was sometimes at 3.8 parts. They must keep it under 4.0 in order to pass EPA standards, but over 3.0 parts is not considered safe for swimming. So, of course, we have purchased chlorine filters for shower heads.

If you need more convincing, think about how your skin feels after a day at the pool. The first thing that you want is a shower. But, without shower filters for copper and chlorine, you are bathing in the same water that you just swam in. Hopefully, that gets my point across.
